Japan LNG Imports in May At Lowest Since 2002

LNG

Japan’s LNG imports fell in May to the lowest level since 2002 with energy savings efforts and increased nuclear power generation.

  • LNG deliveries fell about 30% from last year to 4m tons in May according to Bloomberg ship tracking.
  • Households and businesses are continuing to reduce power and gas usage after the government urged consumers to save energy last year.
  • Nuclear power generation increased year-over-year after some facilities finished maintenance and upgrades, while renewable, mostly solar, capacity is steadily increasing.
  • Gas inventories are still higher than normal for this time of year.
