Japan LNG imports rose by 9% y/y to the highest since January 2023 at 6.641m tonnes in January 2025, according to the Japanese Finance Ministry cited by Interfax.

  • Imports from Southeast Asia increased 33% to 2.032m tonnes while supplies from the Middle East declined 11% to 647k tonnes.
  • LNG imports from Russia fell 12% y/y to 573k tonnes in January 2025 but was the highest in five months.
  • Imports from the U.S. fell 24% y/y to 454k tonnes to drop below supplies from Russia. US imports surpassed Russian supply in November and December.
  • The average imported gas price rose to $469 per thousand cubic meters, up from $451 in December.
