Japan May Household Spending Down 0.5% y/y

  • Average spending by Japanese households with two or more people decreased for third month by 0.5% y/y in May, following the 1.7% y/y drop last month.
  • Spending on food fell 0.5% in May, after last month's 2.1% decrease.
  • Spending on fuel, lighting and water rose 0.5% y/y, slower from last 2.5% increase.
  • The average real income of households with salaried workers dropped 2.7% y/y, narrowing from the 3.5% y/y increase reported in April.
