Japan June Retail Sales +1.5% Y/Y; 4th Monthly Rise

  • Japanese retail sales rose 1.5% y/y in June, decelerating from the 3.7% y/y growth reported last month, marking the forth monthly rise.
  • On a monthly basis, retail sales decreased 1.4%, lower than the 0.6% growth in May.
  • General merchandise sales edged up 4.5% y/y, down from the previous 20.7% y/y, while sales of fabric apparels and accessories edged down 1.1% y/y after rising 12.9% y/y in May.
  • Sales of food and beverages edged down 1.1% y/y, compared with the 0.1% decrease last month.
  • Fuel sales, another key driver, rose 11.5% y/y, slower from the previous 15.2% y/y growth.
  • Sales of machinery and equipment registered a growth of 0.3% y/y, after dropping 2.7% y/y in May.
