Japan February Inflation Quickened On Fuel; +0.6% Y/Y

  • Japan's national average core consumer price index (excluding fresh food) rose 0.6% from the year earlier in February, faster than the 0.2% growth marked in January, marking the tenth recovering month.
  • Energy rose 20.5% y/y, accelerating from the previous 17.9% y/y growth. contributing 1.41 percentage points to CPI.
  • The underlying inflation rate measured by the core-core CPI (excluding fresh food and energy) decreased 1.0% y/y, narrowing from the 1.1% decrease last month.
  • Prices for ex-perishables rose 1.6% y/y, compared with 1.3% y/y increase last month.
  • Prices for household spending fell 3.4% y/y, expanding from the 3.1% y/y drop reported last month, and prices for accommodation rose 6.0% y/y, higher than last 0.6%.
