Japan's Kyushu Electric Considers Lake Charles LNG Investment

Japan's Kyushu Electric is considering investing in Energy Transfer’s US Lake Charles LNG project to help secure stable future supplies, but nothing is yet decided according to Reuters.

  • Kyushu Electric may buy a 10% stake in the project with a 20 year contract to import 1.6m metric tons a year on behalf of other Japanese utilities according to Nikkei business daily on Jan 7.
  • "It is true that we are considering the possibility of taking on LNG from new U.S. LNG projects, including the Lake Charles, as a potential source of future LNG procurement, as well as making an equity participation," said a Kyushu Electric spokesperson.
  • Energy Transfer last year requested an expedited consideration of a new export license after the US DOE previously denied a request for a three-year extension of its Lake Charles LNG project.
