Japan Tokyo May Core CPI +1.9% Y/Y

  • The core consumer price index (excluding fresh food) in the Tokyo area, a leading indicator of the national average, registered a 1.9% increase in May, quicker from the 1.6% growth in April.
  • Energy costs increased 5.9% y/y in May, improving from the 2.9% y/y drop last month.
  • Processed food prices rose 3.2% y/y, the same as the growth marked in April.
  • Prices for household durable goods increased 4.1% y/y, offsetting the previous 3.8% y/y decrease.
  • The core-core CPI (excluding fresh food and energy) -- a key indicator of the underlying trend of inflation -- rose 1.7% y/y in May, following last 1.8% y/y growth.
