LNG stockpiles held by Japanese utilities increased 8.25% w/w to 2.23m tons in the week to June 2 from 2.06m tons the previous week, according to data released by the trade ministry.

  • Volumes were above the previous five year average of 2.11m tons for the end of May but down 9.35% from 2.46m tons a year earlier.
  • Stagnating demand and higher levels of contracted supply have limited spot purchases this year and the reintroduction of nuclear generation capacity could add further downside pressure to LNG demand.
