Jobs Growth Fades As Labour Force Flatlines

  • The u/e rate fell a tenth to a new low of 5.2% as expected (starting 1976) whilst jobs disappointed at +15k (cons +40k) caveated by it following +409k in the previous two months after -200k in Jan.
  • Participation surprisingly fell a tenth to 65.3% as it continues to plateau (prime age -0.2pts) with a 1k increase in the labour force, but employment-to-pop holds at 61.9%, at pre-pandemic levels since last month.
  • A spike in illness-related absences partly drove a fall in hours worked, at 9% vs 7% av for April in 2017-19, off the 10.4% in Jan’22 but still one of highest of pandemic.
  • Wage growth also softened from 3.7% to 3.4% Y/Y (cons 3.6%) for the permanent hourly figure.
