Jordan Fails To Win First Speaker Ballot

US

Republican nominee for speaker, Rep Jim Jordan (R-OH), has failed to win the speaker's gavel in the first ballot on the House floor.

  • Livestream: C-SPAN
  • The rollcall is ongoing but seven Republicans have already cast their vote for an alternate candidate, including former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and former House rep Lee Zeldin. Reminder: Jordan can only drop five votes if all members are present.
  • The vote is reminiscent to the January process which saw 15 ballots over five days before McCarthy claimed the speaker's gavel.
  • Speaker Pro Tempore (interim) Patrick McHenry (R-NC) will now decide whether to conduct a second ballot today, likely after a period for Jordan to court the votes of rebels who are now on record.
  • Most observers believe that the current opposition, largely from the moderate wing of the party, are likely to be less dug in than the conservatives who blocked McCarthy's initial speaker ballot and eventually ousted him.
