Jordan Loses Ground In Speaker Vote, Bid Increasingly Unviable

US

Republican nominee for speaker Rep Jim Jordan (R-OH) has lost ground in the third rollcall to elect a speaker. His bid for speaker is now looking increasingly untenable.

  • Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R-NC) is expected to gavel the House out of session shortly with the path forward unclear. A fourth vote today cannot be ruled out but appears unlikely considering Jordan's failure to improve his vote count.
  • House Republicans may look to restart discussions on empowering McHenry with the authority to move legislation. This is the most straightforward option available to restart Congress and consider legislation to prevent a government shutdown. The McHenry proposal was torpedoed yesterday by conservative House Republicans.
