Jordan: Speaker Vote Set For 12:00 ET Tuesday

US

Republican Rep Jim Jordan (R-OH), the GOP nominee for Speaker of the House of Representatives, has told CNN's Manu Raju that the House will hold a vote for Speaker on Tuesday at 12:00 ET 17:00 BST.

  • Raju: "Jim Jordan told me he will go to the floor and force vote tomorrow at NOON, even if he doesn’t have 217 votes initially. Had previously said he would go to floor once he had 217 votes locked down."
  • Jordan said: “That’s how our great system works. And we will go the floor tomorrow. It's not about pressuring anybody just about we got to have a speaker. You can’t open the House and do the work of the American people and help our dearest and closest friend Israel... We set it for 12p. I feel good about it.”
  • Today Jordan has made progressflipping key votesagainst him but is understood to still be short of the 217 votes required to win the gavel. Jordan likely believes that pressure from the looming government shutdown, and strong political will to legislate action on Israel will compel moderates to votes in his favour.
  • Should Jordan win the gavel, it would be a major break in the traditional leadership of the House. Jordan is a principled and rigid conservative who has little experience in leadership and a long history of eschewing bipartisanship. Most analysts believe that, despite a recent push to ease concerns from moderates, his leadership would usher in a more combative Republican style in the House.
