Judge Sets March 4 Date For Trump Federal Election Interference Trial

US

US District Judge, Tanya Chutka, the judge presiding over the federal prosecution of former President Donald Trump's alleged attempts to overturn the result of the 2020 presidential election has set a March 4, 2024 trial date.

  • In making the decision, Chutka rejected calls from Department of Justice Special Council Jack Smith to begin the trial in December 2023, and from Trump's defence team to delay the trial until 2026 well beyond the 2024 general election.
  • Notably, March 4 falls directly in the middle of the Republican presidential primaries and one day before Super Tuesday on March 5.
  • NBC reports that Chutkan said that while the special counsel team's proposal was too soon, Trump's proposal of 2026 wasn't reasonable.
  • The prevailing view in Washington is that Trump's various legal cases have done little to diminish his clear favourite status to win the Republican presidential nomination but the frequency and magnitude of his court appearances may significantly undermine his ability to manage a presidential campaign.
