June Trade Surplus Softens to R24.2 billion

  • The South African trade balance shrunk in June to R24.2 bln, continuing to surpass forecasts by R2 bln.
  • The surplus was down 6.7bln from the upwardly revised May print of R30.9 bln, as mineral imports were substantially stronger in June.
  • This brings the year-to-date surplus to R133.5 bln, over R116.4 bln below 2021 levels on the back of a 16.7% y/y rise in exports largely overshadowed by a 47.6% y/y jump in imports.
