JV to Build 1GW Azerbaijan-Romanian Power Link

A joint venture (JV) firm will be responsible for building a 1GW interconnector from Azerbaijan through Georgia and the Black Sea to Romania, the Azerbaijan energy ministry said, cited by Interfax.

  • The project is expected to take 3-4 years to complete, with the EU providing €2.3bn for the construction. The exact date of completion is not yet known.
  • Power will also be supplied to Hungary and other EU states.
  • The JV will be created between the TSOs of Azerbaijan, Hungary, Georgia and Romania.
  • An MOU between the joint venture and the participants will be signed in the near future.
  • The first step in the assessment of the project has already been completed.
  • The next meeting on the project will be held in July this year.
