Kan Sources-Haniyeh Killing To Impact Ceasefire Talks

ISRAEL

Amichai Stein at Kan News posts on X; "Sources involved in the hostage deal negotiation: "The assessment at the moment is that, in the first stage, the killing of the Haniyeh will have an impact on the negotiations, since [...]Haniyeh was a significant figure in the negotiations. And all of this is happening, while waiting for the official answer from Hamas to Israeli response". The sources added: "Later, it is possible that things will change, after they will chose a Hamas official to replace him in managing the contacts in Qatar."

  • Prior to the killing of Hamas political director Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, Israel and Hamas had accused one another of underminig the prospect of a ceasefire-for-hostages deal that could see hostilities in Gaza wind down. Reuters: "Hamas accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of adding new conditions and demands to a U.S.-backed truce proposal, after the latest talks conducted through mediators.Netanyahu, however, denied making any alterations and said Hamas was the one insisting on numerous changes to the original proposal."
  • A number of reportshave described Haniyeh as the more 'pragmatic' face of Hamas, in comparison to leader in Gaza Yahya Sinwar, who has directed military operations and is seen as more inclined to continue hostilities.
