ISRAEL: Katz To Austin-'Chance For Gaza Deal w/Hope Of Relasing All Hostages'

ISRAEL

Speaking to US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz says that "There is currently a chance for a new [Gaza ceasefire] deal, with the hope of releasing all the abductees, including those with American citizenship". Katz's comments come as there appears to be renewed momentum towards a deal.

  • On 7 Dec, Qatari PM Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said “We have sensed after the [US] election that the momentum is coming back,” while NYT reported on 9 Dec that talks "are quietly advancing behind the scenes, mediators and officials say, after the Israel-Hezbollah truce in Lebanon and pressure from President-elect Donald J. Trump."
  • On 10 Dec, a senior Hamas official claimed that while US President-elect Donald Trump is pushing for a deal, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has been 'reluctant' to reach agreement.
