Kazakhstan Considers Building Oil Pipeline Across Caspian Sea

Kazakhstan will explore options for building an oil pipeline across the Caspian Sea floor and linking Atyrau to Kuryk, the Kazakh Energy Ministry said, cited by Interfax.

  • "In the medium term, the possibility of constructing an oil pipeline from Atyrau to Kuryk is being considered," the ministry said.
  • Kazakhstan may also increase trans-Caspian oil shipments to 7mmtpa, consistent with the Aktau port’s capacity. This would require around ten new tankers with a deadweight of 12k mt to ensure safe shipments.
  • Kazakhstan is looking to diversify their oil exports, having been traditionally reliant on the CPC terminal on Russia’s Black Sea.
  • They are also looking at boosting further exports via Azerbaijan.
