Kazakhstan Looking to Boost Azeri Pipeline Access

Kazakhstan expects to transport up to 3m mtpa of its oil via the Baku-Supsa pipeline and is in negotiations, according to Interfax.

  • This is part of Kazakhstan’s attempts to diversify its export routes. This is particularly important due to sanctions against Russia.
  • Although Kazakh crude is not under sanctions, loadings from Russia create indirect issues for Kazakh products.
  • Kazakh exports via Russia through CPC on the Black Sea constitute around 80% of loadings .
  • Kazakhstan also began using a separate pipeline - the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline – in 2023. 1.5m mt of Kazakh oil is expected to be pumped via BTC this year.
