Kazakhstan Making Efforts to Reduce CPC Reliance

OIL

According to Reuters reports, Kazakhstan's state oil firm Kazmunaigaz (KMG) is in advanced discussions with the trading arm of Azerbaijan's state firm SOCAR to allow 1.5 million tonnes per year of Kazakh crude to be sold through the Azeri pipeline that delivers oil to Turkey's Mediterranean port of Ceyhan.

  • Kazhakstan is seeking alterative ways to get crude to the market after facing numerous issues using the CPC pipeline that passes through Russia to fill vessels in the Black Sea.
  • The Azeri pipeline will only offer around 30,000 bpd volume of the 1.3-1.4mn bpd that passes through the CPC.
  • The new flows via the Azeri are expected to begin next month.
  • Kazhakstan is also set to begin flows via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) from next month too. The two new pipeline options will offer a combined 100,000 bpd.
  • Other projects are being explored to reduce reliance on the CPC pipeline.
