KDU-CSL Discuss Jurecka's Fate As Party Leader, President Replaces Chief Of Staff

  • Senior executives of the KDU-CSL party convenes today to discuss the fate of its leader and Deputy Prime Minister Marian Jurecka and set the date for the party's national congress. The coverage of the matter in the local press reflects growing confidence that Jurecka's days in office are numbered. Ex-leader of KDU-CSL Jiri Cunek told Cesky rozhlas PLUS radio that Jurecka's resignation as party leader would allow the situation to calm down and KDU-CSL could move on to discussing Jurecka's tenure in the government.
  • President Petr Pavel's Chief of Staff Jana Vohralikova resigned amid her power struggle with the head of state's key foreign policy adviser Petr Kolar, according to local source reports. She will be replaced by Milan Vasina, current head of the Aspen Institute, in mid-February. There were several high-profile resignations in the President's team in the past few months and Seznam Zpravy suggests that some may have been linked to dissatisfaction with Vohralikova's work.
  • Lidove Noviny ran comments from political scientist Lukas Jelinek, who assessed that the Constitutional Court's verdict on the government's pension reform may give the ruling coalition more room to forcefully push legislation through parliament. The expert sees the ruling as implying a degree of leniency towards bending parliamentary rules of procedure when the opposition obstructs the debate.
