Keystone Clean-Up Complicated by Bitumen Spill

The Keystone Pipeline spill involved bitumen which is complicating the clean-up operations the US EPA said Thursday.

  • The parts of the pipeline carrying oil from Alberta, Canada, to refineries in Illinois opened on Wednesday at reduced capacity.
  • The section from south of Steele City, Nebraska, to a storage hub in Cushing, Oklahoma, remains closed.
  • Bitumen is often mixed with lighter oil to reduce its viscosity and allow it to flow through the pipeline.
  • Bloomberg sources had earlier said they expected a full restart December 20 but the clean up process may now complicate this full reopening.
