King To Name Malaysia's Next PM, Barisan Nasional Ready To Become Opposition

Caretaker Prime Minister Ismail Sabri's Barisan Nasional looked poised to move to the opposition as the deadline for submitting proposed coalition arrangements expired at 2pm local time.

  • Speaking to reporters outside of the royal palace, Malaysia's King said he would "make the decision as soon as possible" on who will be handed the mandate to form the next government. The monarch may announce his decision as soon as today.
  • Ismail Sabri said that Barisan Nasional has decided to remain neutral and become the opposition for now after the bloc's MPs held a meeting to decide on whether to team up with Pakatan Harapan or Perikatan Nasional.
  • Reminder that the election held last Saturday resulted in a hung parliament, with both PH and PN scrambling to secure the support of a simple majority of 112 MPs. Both political groups have made contested claims to that effect.
  • Senior PN members said this morning that no lawmaker withdrew support for Muhyiddin Yassin as the next Prime Minister, while one MP submitted his letter of support to the royal palace on top of yesterday's "more than 112."
