LNG: Korea Gas’ LNG Sales Suffer Sharp Decline on Mild Winter: Platts

LNG

Korea Gas’ LNG sales in November fell 13.9% from a year earlier, which marks the sharpest decline in a year due to weak demand for heating and power production, Platts said.

  • Kogas has a monopoly in domestic Korean natural gas sales and sold 2.761m mt of LNG last month, compared to 3.103m mt a year earlier, the company said.
  • Kogas did not disclose how much LNG it sold for the first 11 months, but Platts estimates it had sold a total of 30.226m mt Jan-Nov, down 1.1% on the year.
  • Korea’s LNG demand is unlikely to rebound in the peak winter season as the government plans to maximise nuclear power plant operations to boost electricity supply.
  • Five nuclear reactors with a combined capacity of 4.5 GW are currently offline for maintenance, accounting for 17.3% of the country’s overall nuclear capacity.
  • South Korea imported 38.06m mt of LNG over Jan-Oct, up 7.5% on the year.
