Kremlin-Conditions For 'Economic Mobilisation' Not Yet Met

Comments from Kremlin spox Dmitri Peskov hitting wires. He is asked about the possibility of 'economic mobilisation' (the marshaling and coordination of national resources by gov't during a time of war, essentially the Kremlin taking control of national industries), says that the conditions for this are not met.

  • An economic mobilisation would make a huge impact on the lives of Russian citizens, therefore risking a significant domestic backlash. So far ordinary Russians have largely been spared direct impact from the invasion (barring the loss of western brands and imports).
  • However, an economic mobilisation would be the clearest sign to Russians that the invasion is not going to plan, potentially raising the prospect of opposition from anti-war factions or indeed ultranationalists that seek a more comprehensive war in Ukraine.
  • Asked whether the Ukraine campaign is going to plan, Peskov states 'de facto we are opposed by NATO and all its powers, this has led to the need for partial mobilisation'.
