Kremlin-Macron Comments Re: Troops In Ukraine 'Very Dangerous'

Kremlin spox Dmitri Peskov has said that French President Emmanuel Macron's latest comments regarding the possibility of him sending troops to Ukraine are 'very dangerous'. Says that Moscow is following Macron's statements closely. Adds that comments from UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron, on the prospect of strikes against the Russian Federation using British weapons, are also dangerous. Peskov: 'There is a verbal escalation in the West as a whole. This could threaten Europe's security.'

• Asked in an interview with The Economist whether he stood by comments made earlier in 2024 regarding the prospect of French boots on Ukrainian soil, Macron stated that "I'm not ruling anything out, because we are facing someone who is not ruling anything out," France24: "Macron said "if Russia decided to go further, we will in any case all have to ask ourselves this question" of sending troops, describing his refusal to rule out such a move as a "strategic wake-up call for my counterparts"."
• With a major Russian offensive possible in the summer, Macron has talked up the prospect of NATO troops on the ground in Ukraine - not in front-line roles but as strategic support for Ukrainian forces. Nevertheless, the prospect of direct NATO-Russia conflict would raise security concerns in Europe significantly.
