Kremlin-New UK PM Comments Re: Ukraine Striking Russia 'Irresponsible'

RUSSIA

Kremlin spox Dmitry Peskov has responded to comments from new UK PM Sir Keir Starmer regarding Ukraine's use of UK-made Storm Shadow missiles. While travelling to the NATO summit in Washington, D.C., Starmer said that it was up to Ukraine how it chooses to use the missiles, adding that “obviously to be used in accordance with international humanitarian law as you would expect,” adding that it was his view that the missiles be used "for defensive purposes. But it is for Ukraine to decide how to deploy it for those defensive purposes,”

  • Storm Shadows have a range of more than 155 miles (250km), meaning they could hit targets far into the Russian Federation depending on their deployment.
  • Strikes on key infrastructure in Russia, such asoil refineries, have so far been carried out by drones. Should Ukraine be able to use long-range missiles to hit Russia proper it could significantly increase the effectiveness and damage caused by such strikes.
  • Peskov said that 'If the UK allows Ukraine to strike Russia with British weapons, this is [and] irresponsible escalatory step', adding 'we will respond'.
  • Bloomberg reports: "...the US government has so far resisted lifting all restrictions on the use of its weapons by Kyiv. The Biden administration says it has not enabled Ukrainian strikes deep within Russia, considering that a red line in order to prevent escalation with Moscow."
