Kremlin Talks Up Relations w/North Korea, But No Date For Putin Visit

RUSSIA

Wires reporting comments from Kremlin spox Dmitri Peskov. Regarding the anticipated upcoming visit of President Vladimir Putin to North Korea. Peskov does not give a date for a visit, but says that North Korea 'is our neighbour and we are developing bilateral relations...the potential of our relationship is very deep...no-one should have any doubts about our right to develop ties with our neighbours.'

  • The increasingly-close relations between Moscow and Pyongyang have garnered significant interest in the west, given the supply of ammunition, arms, and missiles from North Korea to Russia for use in the invasion of Ukraine in exchange for the provison of raw materials and enhanced military technology.
  • The arrival of four Russian warships in the Cuban capital, Havana, has also sparked international interest. Peskov stated that 'we see no reason for anyone to be concerned by this'. Pentagon press sec Sabina Singh said that "We of course take it seriously, but these exercises don't pose a threat to the United States," and that the Russian ships were part of "routine naval visits that we've seen under different administrations,"
  • Nevertheless, with US-Russia tensions at their highest point since the Cold War the presence of the vessels - including a nuclear-powered submarine - so close to the US mainland acts as a further sign that Russia is willing to 'meddle in the US' backyard' in response to the US' support for Ukraine.
