KUWAIT-Emir Rebukes Parl't & Gov't In Speech As Cabinet Resigns

MIDEAST

Kuwait's new Emir Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Sabah has accepted the resignation of the Cabinet according to state outlet KUNA. The resignation of the cabinet is customary following the accession of a new Emir. Sheikh Meshal ascended to the emirship following the death of his half-brother, Sheikh Nawaf, on 16 Dec. Meshal had served as crown prince since his brother became Emir in 2020, and has played a senior role in Kuwaiti politics since Nawaf's health declined significantly in recent months.

  • AFP reports that Meshal, in his speech before parliament following his swearing in, lambasted lawmakers, stating that, "I have stressed in my previous speeches that there are national obligations that must be fulfilled," ... But "we have not noticed any change or correction" from parliament and cabinet...the two entities have "harmed the interests of the people and the country," he said..."We have warned on many occasions that crises, challenges and dangers surround us," ...underscoring "the necessity to reconsider our current reality in all its aspects".
  • Reuters: "Kuwait bans political parties and candidates run as independents, but its legislature has more influence than similar bodies in other Gulf monarchies, including the power to pass and block laws, question ministers and submit no-confidence motions. Frequent political deadlock in Kuwait, the Gulf region's oldest and most lively legislature, has for decades led to cabinet reshuffles and parliament dissolutions."
  • No significant change in foreign policy stance is expected, with Kuwait remaining a staunch US ally. Most focus will be on Meshal's selection of a crown prince, and whether he hails from his own or a new generation of leaders.
