Kuwait's Mega Refinery Starts Operations

REFINING

Kuwait’s Al-Zour mega refinery has started the first phase of commercial operations its project operator Kipic said on Sunday.

  • Al-Zour will expand Kuwait's refining capacity to 1.415mn b/d from around 800,000 b/d when it reaches full capacity next year.
  • The refinery, which is the world's largest, is "a vital outlet for the disposal of heavy Kuwaiti oil and provides refined products for export in global markets with standard specifications", acting Kipic chief executive Waleed al Bader told state news agency Kuna.
  • The entire refinery, with combined crude-processing capacity of 615,000 barrels a day, could be up and running by January according to news outlet sources.
  • Al-Zour’s refinery may emerge as a key source of diesel for Europe, where supplies are currently tight and set to worsen when the Russian oil product ban takes place Feb 5.
