Kyushu Electric to Wait Before Lake Charles LNG Decision

LNG

Japan's Kyushu Electric Power will wait until after the US resumes issuing export licences for new LNG projects before deciding on whether to invest in the Lake Charles project according to Reuters citing Executive Officer Takashi Mitsuyoshi.

  • Kyushu Electric previously said to be considering investing in Energy Transfer’s US Lake Charles LNG and other projects to help secure stable future supplies.
  • The company is seeking stakes into development projects and not just relying on imports through long-term contracts said.
  • "We were a bit surprised by the decision," he said. "I assume we won't be able to make a decision until then," referring to when the US pause is lifted.
  • Kyushu remained in talks with Energy Transfer, he added, including on signing a long-term purchase agreement.
  • The company is in talks with state-owned Japan Bank For International Cooperation (JBIC) and Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) for financial support for the possible US deal.
