Largest Trade Union Calls for Extension of Fuel Subsidies

  • COSATU have called for the government to extend fuel price subsidies beyond the planned expiration date in July. The trade body (South Africa’s largest) also called for further deregulation of the fuel industry. The calls follow an open letter from Ramaphosa earlier in the week, in which he warned the government cannot continue the policy indefinitely.
  • The R350 COVID-19 grants paid to eligible unemployed South Africans was not paid at all across April and May this year, according to the SASSA. According to reports, new processes are being put in place and the SASSA hopes to pay those in mid-June after the payment of other grants.
  • Police are being deployed across South Africa in response to threats of a national shutdown today. Calls for mass protest are linked to rising fuel prices, but there has been no official permit submitted by a specific worker’s group.
