Laschet Set To Step Down As Head Of CDU

GERMANY

Wires and social media reporting that Armin Laschet, president of the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the man who led the party to its worst electoral performance since WWII, is set to resign.

  • Laschet has supposedly called a party congress for the end of the year to allow the party to reposition itself, with the implicit assumption that this will also mean the end of his tenure as party head.
  • This announcement also effectively ends the prospect of a centre-right Jamaica coalition being formed between the CDU, Greens, and FDP given that Laschet is not likely to lead the party following the congress.
  • Wires also reporting that the CDU has said Laschet will deliver at statement at 1830CET (1230ET, 1730BST).
