Late Equities Roundup: Chip Stocks Recede

  • Stocks are off midday lows in late trade, Dow components outperforming at the moment, Nasdaq still weaker. Currently, DJIA shares are up 2.39 points (0.01%) at 35322.46, S&P E-Mini futures down 6.25 points (-0.14%) at 4513, Nasdaq down 72.4 points (-0.5%) at 13814.7.
  • Laggers: Information Technology, Communication Services and Consumer Discretionary sectors continued to underperform late Wednesday. Semiconductor makers weighed on the IT with shares of Super Micro Computer -23% despite announcing better than expected earnings late Tuesday, focus on weaker revenue outlook despite the ongoing demand for high performance chips for AI applications. Nvidia shares that have enjoyed meteoric rise this year (+195% YTD) are trading -3.2%, AMD -1.5Intel -0.9%.
  • Meanwhile, Communication Services sector weighed by media and entertainment: Paramount -2.85%, Live Nation -1.55%, Meta -1.3%, Netflix -.88%. Consumer Discretionary weighed by weaker auto makers with Tesla -1.35%, GM -.65%, Ford -0.5%.
  • Leading gainers: Energy, Consumer Staples and Real Estate sectors outperformed. Energy sector shares held gains after crude climbed to nine month highs Wednesday, WTI marking 84.44. Shares of APA +3.35%, Coterra Energy +3.25%, Marathon +2.85%. Meanwhile, Consumer Staples buoyed by retail stores: Dollar General +1.25%, Dollar Tree +1.05%.
