Latest Poll Shows Soeder As Favoured Candidate For Chancellor

GERMANY

The latest FGW poll shows Bavaria's Minister-President and head of the centre-right Christian Social Union Markus Soeder as respondents preferred choice for chancellor, beating the potential chancellor candidates from the Greens, Social Democrats and crucially, the Christian Democratic Union, the CSU's nationwide sister party.

  • Would [x] be suitable as Chancellor? Yes-No. FGW, 25/03/21
    • Markus Soeder (CSU): 56% - 36%
    • Olaf Scholz (SPD): 39% - 51%
    • Robert Habeck (Green): 28% - 55%
    • Annalena Baerbock (Green): 25% - 57%
    • Armin Laschet (CDU): 23% - 65%
  • The CDU and CSU are set to decide on a joint candidate to run for chancellor in the September federal election at some point in April or May. Continued declines in overall polling for the CDU/CSU could see the decision brought forward to provide a shot in the arm to the centre-right as the campaign season approaches.
