LATIN AMERICA: Several Nations Sceptical Over Venezuela Election Result

LATIN AMERICA
  • Venezuela President Nicolás Maduro won re-election with 51.2% of votes, according to the electoral council (CNE), which in its majority is loyal to him. Opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia received 44.2%, CNE reported, but his coalition claimed victory, saying it had garnered 70% of votes. Several nations have expressed doubts about the transparency of the election, while traditional allies have congratulated the long-time leader.
  • US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken said "we have serious concerns that the result announced does not reflect the will or the votes of the Venezuelan people," calling on electoral officials to publish the "detailed tabulation" of votes. "The international community is watching this very closely and will respond accordingly," Blinken added.
  • Some Latin American countries — including Colombia, also expressed scepticism of the results. Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo said it was important to clear up any doubts about the results, similar to views expressed by a number of European nations, including Spain and Italy. Russia, China, Iran and Cuba were among those to congratulate Maduro.
  • Analysts have noted that some opposition supporters could take to the streets in protest, threatening to submerge Venezuela into a new period of political unrest, like those in 2014, 2017 and 2019.
  • As a reminder, the Biden administration had granted a reprieve on energy sanctions for 6 months late last year as it sought free and fair elections in this result. Energy sanctions were reimposed April 18 and the issues surrounding the latest result leave any talks about progress unlikely.
