Lavrov: Belarus Mediators Not Needed, EU Comments Driven By Geopolitics

RUSSIA

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that there is no need for mediators in Belarus as the gov't there faces widespread protests, according to reports from state news agency TASS. Instead Lavrov said he hopes the Belarusian opposition would sit down for negotiations with the gov't in Minsk.

  • Lavrov also added that EU statements on Belarus were 'driven by geopolitics'.
  • Lavrov's comments come at the moment the European Council extraordinary meeting to discuss Belarus starts.
