Lavrov-'I See No Arguments For Black Sea Grain Deal Extension'

WHEAT

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov speaking in a press conference makes comments regarding the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which is due for renewal on 17 July. Lavrov states that "the attitude of the West to this deal is outrageous", and that "I see no arguments for [the deal's] extension" as "grain is not being exported to the poorest countries." There remains notable concern that Russia will not approve the deal's extension beyond 17 July, risking grain supplies to the MENA region in particular, that have seen wheat futures jump since the start of the month.

  • Lavrov adds that "if the West is so worried about food security, it should unblock fertiliser [stocks] frozen in European ports." Russia has long complained that its fertiliser exports from Black Sea ports are being hindered, thereby voiding its deal with Ukraine, brokered and monitored by the UN and Turkey.
