Lawmakers Back Bills Key In Unlocking EU Funds

  • Poland’s ruling party secured parliamentary backing for legislation that aims to unlock more than €35 billion ($38 billion) of the European Union’s post-pandemic aid eight months ahead of a general election.
    • The bill, which now awaits approval from President Andrzej Duda, seeks to reverse some of the contested changes in the judiciary following a bitter dispute with the European Commission over the erosion of democratic standards.
  • Additionally, lawmakers voted to ease the limits on onshore wind farm development, helping the government reach one of the key milestones needed to access the EU recovery funds. (Bloomberg)
  • The government of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has struggled for seven months to find a majority in parliament to back the legislation.
  • The bill will now go to the Senate before being signed by the president.
