LDP Allows Factions To Function As "Policy Groups" But Not Vehicles For Funding

Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) approved internal reforms which stopped short of abolishing the controversial faction system, despite pressure for a more comprehensive overhaul amid the political funding scandal. A special reform panel resolved that factions will no longer serve as funding vehicles, but will be allowed to function as "policy groups".

  • Nonetheless, the Kishida, Abe and Nikai factions, whose members were facing accusations related to the scandal, decided to dissolve themselves. The smallest eight-member Moriyama faction followed suit today.
  • Asahi reports that Prime Minister Kishida's decision to disband the faction he previously chaired caused tensions with LDP Deputy President Taro Aso and Secretary General Toshimitsu Motegi, who are not planning to dissolve their factions.
  • Pressure is piling on former executives of the Abe faction to voluntarily leave the party, which has been confirmed by Prime Minister Kishida. Meanwhile, the PM is refusing to step down as lawmaker or head of government.
