LDP Leadership Election September 16: Jiji

Jiji Press reporting that the leadership election for the governing Liberal Democratic Party will take place on September 16, following the resignation of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe last week.

  • Elections for the LDP leadership are held among LDP representatives in the Diet as well as LDP party members (as long as they have been paid members for at least two years).
  • Prospective candidates must have the backing of at least 20 LDP Diet members to get onto the leadership ballot.
  • Should no single candidate win a majority of votes, Diet members and the 47 prefecture party organisations will hold another vote on the same day between the two highest-placed candidates to determine a leader.
