POWER: LEBA EU Power Volumes Fall in December, Narrows EU EEX Volume Deficit

Total power European LEBA volumes- which include all physical OTC forward contracts registered on clearing platforms – fell from the previous month to 489TWh in December 2024 from 593TWh. However, the deficit in volumes compared to the EEX EU derivatives power market narrowed, data from LEBA show.

  • The difference in total EU volumes recorded by LEBA in comparison to EEX narrowed to 236TWh in December 2024 compared to 331TWh in November 2024 (see chart).
  • EU power LEBA volumes totalled 5,596TWh in 2024 compared to EEX’s 8,438TWh, as French and German EEX volumes surpassed LEBA’s considerably.
  • German EEX power volumes totalled 5,850TWh last year compared to LEBA’s 3,457TWh. While French EEX volumes came to 1,265TWh, higher than 891TWh recorded by LEBA.
  • Additionally, total EU LEBA power volumes in December climbed by 19.8% on the year, with Germany and France recording 11.7% and 40.2%, respectively, increases compared to December 2023.
  • In comparison, EEX’s total EU power volumes climbed by 33% on the year in December, with German and French volumes noting 30% and 55%, respectively, on year climbs.
