Leftist Presidential Candidates Lead The Way In Pre-Election Polling

CHILE

Latest opinion polling from Chile shows two potential leftist candidates leading the way in public popularity stakes ahead of November's presidential election.

  • Activa/Pulso Ciudadano poll: Presidential election (likely voters) - Daniel Jadue (Communist Party of Chile, left): 22% (+9), Pamela Jiles (Humanist Party, left): 20% (+5), Joaquin Lavin (Independent Democratic Union, conservative): 10% (-7). +/- 24-29 March '21. Fieldwork: 13-16 April '21. Sample size: 623
  • It should be noted that the larger parties are yet to officially select candidates, and the small sample size of this poll leaves a wide margin for error. This is likely to see polling shift around as new candidates enter the contest.
  • Chile has experienced a devastating impact from COVID-19 and has experienced political tumult over the past two years resulting in the imminent drafting of a new constitution. In neighbouring Peru, a far-left candidate has made it to the presidential run-off on a broad wave of anti-establishment sentiment, and with Jadue and Jiles emerging as popular early candidates there is the possibility that a similar outcome could take place in Chile.
