LNG: Belgium Calls for EU Ban on Russian LNG: Montel

LNG

Belgium, one of the EU’s largest importers of LNG, has urged the EU to ban the Russian fuel and warned that companies cannot break long-term contracts unless the bloc imposes sanctions, Montel said citing the FT.

  • Belgium’s Energy Minister told the FT that Europe must go further to stop Russian LNG and that rules introduced by Brussels in Dec to stop Russian energy companies using EU infrastructure did not go far enough.
  • “We have looked into this… We have Russian gas coming into Belgium. I have looked under every stone, and the gas [legislation] is not going to help,” Belgium’s Energy Minister Van der Straeten told the FT. “We need a European approach.”
  • The EU has not introduced any sanctions on Russian LNG other than banning trans-shipments, which is still yet to come into force.
  • Belgium was the second-largest importer of Russian LNG in 2023.
