LNG Japan Pens $880m Deal for Giant Gas Project Share

LNG

LNG Japan has agreed a deal for a stake in a giant offshore natural gas project in Australia, as it looks to secure gas supplies, according to Bloomberg.

  • The joint venture, owned by Sumitomo Corp and Sojitz will take a 10% share in the Scarborough operation from Woodside, which will drill offshore gas to produce around 8m mtpa.
  • LNG Japan will also supply 12 cargoes per annum from the project - around 0.9m mt of LNG - for a decade beginning 2026.
  • Under the deal, LNG Japan will pay a $500 million purchase price, in addition to other costs such as reimbursements for project spending, expected to bring the total to about $880 million, according to Woodside’s statement.
  • Japan is the largest buyer of Australian LNG and has been striking new deals after the gas crisis of 2022 prompted buyers to lock in deals and invest in projects to guarantee energy security.
