LNG: Spot LNG Imports to Asia Fell Further From May Record

LNG

Key Asia market imports of spot LNG declined again in July, led by India and mainland China, according to a BNEF. Japan and South Korea spot deliveries also fell but Taiwan’s more than doubled.

  • Spot LNG deliveries to mainland China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, India and Thailand fell about 0.4m tons from June to 4.8m metric tons in July. The decline follows a record high volume in May of 5.5m tons.
  • A drop in imports to India led the decline in July after a drop to mainland China drove imports lower in June.
  • Impots to India fell almost 0.6m tons in July as temperatures declined during the monsoon season and following a spike higher in June due to a heatwave.
  • Imports to mainland China in May were boosted by opportunistic buying due to low Asia spot LNG prices earlier this year for May delivery at below $10/mmbtu.
  • Taiwan’s spot LNG deliveries more than doubled in July amid a new supply agreement with Woodside and after the shutdown of nuclear reactors.
