Local Elections Vote Count Ongoing

UK

The votes in UK local elections are being counted after polls closed at 22:00 BST. The BBC's snapshot of early results shows that both Labour and Tories have lost councillors, with Lib Dems and Greens have made some gains.

  • There is ongoing debate on Labour's chances to win back the "red wall." Many are pointing to signs of headwinds on that front, but a former Downing Street pollster has challenged this narrative, noting that "change in these elections is on 2018," when "Labour *had* the Red Wall nationally."
  • Source reports are doing the rounds of the Tories seeing themselves at risk of losing some flagship London constituencies, including Westminster, Barnet and Wandsworth. BBC reports that "nearly all London councils are reporting early signs of very low turnout in this year's elections."
  • The counting of votes in Northern Ireland Assembly election won't start until 08:00 BST, which means results can be expected after Asia hours. The Electoral Office pointed to signs of decent turnout, with LucidTalk reporting increases in unionist and mixed areas of Belfast.
