Lower LNG Demand in Sum23 for Japan and South Korea

LNG

LNG imports to Japan and South Korea are expected to fall yr/yr this summer due to higher nuclear output and high gas inventory levels according to Bloomberg.

  • Lower demand for LNG imports for gas power generation will be driven by higher nuclear output in both countries and coal generation in South Korea. Nuclear output should increase in Japan with the restart of two Kansai Electric reactors and in South Korea due to the commissioning of a new reactor at the end of 2022.
  • Above average end of winter season storage levels are likely due to the warmer-than-normal winter temperatures but a hot summer would add upside demand risk.
  • Japan is forecast to see an 18% decrease in LNG demand in Sum23 compared to Sum22 and South Korea a 10% drop.
