BRAZIL: Lula-If Trump Puts Tariffs On Brazil, There Will Be Reciprocity

BRAZIL

Reuters reporting comments from President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva regarding Brazil-US relations under the Trump administration. Says that if US President Donald Trump issues tariffs on Brazil, "there will be reciprocity". Adds that "Trump was democratically elected and so was I; [so] I'd like for mutual respect". Lula: "I want to improve our [long-standing] relations with the US."

  • Lula says that he sent a congratulatory letter to Trump after his inauguration. Adds that a 'meeting is not in sight now', but that the two could end up meeting at multilateral events.
  • As the US State Dep't reports, "the United States is Brazil's second-largest trading partner. In 2023, U.S. exports of goods and services to Brazil were $37.9 billion, down 26 percent from 2022, and imports from Brazil were $36.9 billion, down 2 percent from 2022."
  • There have been signs of strain between Washington D.C., and Brasilia over the deportation of Brazilian nationals from the US, with the Brazilian Foreign Ministry criticising the “degrading treatment” of individuals on deportation flights. However, the two sides have agreed on regular dialogue over the method and condition of deportations that could smooth over the early disagreements.
