Macron-'Europe Should Show It Is Not A Vassal Of The US'

FRANCE

French President Emmanuel Macron making a wide-ranging speech on foreign and security policy at the Sorbonne University in Paris. Making some fairly headline-grabbing comments Macron claims that “There is a risk our Europe could die,” adding that the contient must review its growth model, "because the rules of the game have changed", and that "Europe is at risk of impoverishment".

  • In comments that will likely raise eyebrows in Brussels and Washington, D.C., Macron claims that "Europe should show that it is not a vassal of the United States." Macron has previously talked-up the idea of the EU's 'strategic autonomy' in making its own foreign policy choices. However, using such a loaded term as 'vassal' could draw some backlash given that the US and EU under the NATO umbrella have sought to present a fully united stance with regards the war in Ukraine and Russia's threats made to the West.
  • On security Macron claims that ""Europe needs to change scale on defence...We are experiencing a profound change in terms of security...We must target a credible defence for Europe...We should create a European military academy to train high-ranking military personnel....We should develop a European cybersecurity capacity....We need to reinforce our ties with Britain on defence issues."
  • Should be noted that in making such a bombastic speech, Macron may have an eye on garnering public attention ahead of the upcoming European Parliament elections on 9 June. His centrist Renaissance group is trailing the right-wing nationalist National Rally in opinion polls by a sizeable margin.
